Breathe, Move, Reflect:
A Mindfulness Journey with Doula Lo

On February 19th, our community came together for a powerful and nourishing evening with Doula Lo, a full-spectrum holistic doula and birth assistant. Breathe, Move, Reflect – An Intergenerational Mindfulness Workshop provided a space for youth and people of all generations to ground themselves, release tension, and reconnect with their bodies. Through breathwork, journaling, light movement, and meaningful reflection, we explored the importance of mindfulness as both a personal and collective practice. This session wasn’t just about learning—it was about feeling, experiencing, and growing together in community.

A Moment to Pause in a Chaotic World

In today’s fast-paced, overwhelming world, taking time to care for ourselves isn’t always easy. Doula Lo led us through mindfulness practices that felt deeply restorative—reminding us that self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and candles (though those are great too!). It’s about tuning into our breath, listening to our bodies, and creating space to process our emotions, whether it’s the stress of daily life or the heaviness of world events. These simple yet transformative techniques reminded us that healing can be found in stillness and that we each hold the power to regulate our nervous systems and tend to our mental well-being.

Community Reflections:
What Mindfulness Means to Us

One of the most beautiful parts of the evening was hearing participants reflect on what mindfulness means to them. As one participant said, “Mindfulness to me means having the skills to be aware of my emotions.” Another reflected, “My mindfulness practice is taking deep breaths, going on walks, getting fresh air, and just being present.” These words resonated with many in the space, affirming that mindfulness is both deeply personal and universally important. 🌿

Through discussion and journaling prompts, we explored our own mindfulness practices and how they can be improved. Whether it was:

  • 🌬️ Setting small reminders to breathe
  • 🚶‍♂️ Incorporating more movement into our daily routine
  • 📝 Journaling our thoughts to release tension

Everyone walked away with a new tool to add to their personal wellness toolkit. It was inspiring to hear how small, intentional actions can lead to profound shifts in how we move through the world.

A Space for Collective Care and Joy

Throughout the workshop, the chat was filled with affirmations, shared wisdom, and moments of joy. From deep reflections to lighthearted moments (yes, we shared laughs, good vibes, and jammed to a beautiful playlist on grief), the event was a perfect blend of grounding energy and community warmth. There was something magical about being in a space where vulnerability was met with support, where each individual’s experience was honored, and where joy and care were woven into the fabric of our gathering.

Mindfulness as a Tool for Student Wellness

This workshop directly aligns with the work of our students, who have been leading a powerful Mental Health Campaign advocating for student-centered solutions in schools. Prioritizing mindfulness and holistic self-care is a key part of that movement, and this workshop helped us embody the change we are fighting for.

By creating spaces like this, we’re fostering sustainable practices for young people to heal, reflect, and build resilience together, while also embodying and visualizing the kinds of spaces that youth are looking for in their schools. As our students continue organizing for better mental health resources, workshops like these serve as a reminder that rest, restoration, and inner care are radical forms of resistance and community care.

Looking Ahead: More Opportunities for Mindfulness

This workshop was just the beginning! If you found this event meaningful, let us know! Your voice shapes these spaces, and we want to continue offering spaces for collective rest, healing, and liberation. There are so many ways to integrate mindfulness into our organizing work and everyday lives, and we will continue to create opportunities for youth-led wellness initiatives that center joy, community, and empowerment. 🎤✨

Until then, remember: Breathe deeply. Move with intention. Reflect often. Your well-being matters, and you are always worthy of care. Amidst organizing and our daily lives, let’s continue making space to nurture ourselves and each other.
